Elvis Andrus’ walkoff single in the bottom of the ninth inning carried the Texas Rangers to a 5-4 triumph over the Detroit Tigers on Friday night.
Justin Smoak opened the ninth with a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Matt Treanor. Ryan Garko drew an intentional walk and pinch-hitter Nelson Cruz walked to load the bases before Andrus delivered the big hit.
Detroit had come back to even the score in the top of the ninth with a two-out rally. Johnny Damon doubled to right to put runners on second and third and Magglio Ordonez followed with a two-run single.
Neftali Feliz (1-0) picked up the win despite blowing the save. Fu-Te Ni (0-1) took the loss in allowing three walks and one run in an inning of relief.
Texas starter Rich Harden struggled for the third straight game, lasting only 4 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on six hits with four walks and five strikeouts.
