Tampa Bay Rays manager Joe Maddon had catcher John Jaso leading off against the Texas Rangers Sunday for the second straight game, marking the first time in franchise history that a catcher had batted in No.1 slot.

But Jaso came through with five RBIs on Sunday to lead the Rays to a 9-5 victory over the Texas Rangers in the finale of a three-game series. With the win the Rays (37-20) avoided being swept by the Rangers (30-26).

Jaso belted a two-run homer in the third to give the Rays a 2-1 lead and then added a two-run single in the eighth and an RBI double in the ninth to secure the victory.

Carlos Pena had a solo home run in the fourth for the Rays, who also got RBI singles from B.J. Upton and Evan Longoria.

Texas took a 1-0 lead in the second on a solo shot from Matt Treanor, who had two homers in the game, but that was the only lead it had all day. The Rangers pulled to within one at 5-4 with RBI singles from Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton in the sixth, but didn’t threaten after that.

Rays starter Matt Garza (6-4) earned the victory, while Rangers starter Rich Harden (3-2) took the loss.
