Matt Joyce doubled to lead off the bottom of the 10th inning and scored from third on a Fernando Rodney wild pitch with two outs to give the Tampa Bay Rays a 2-1 victory over the visiting Los Angeles Angels on Saturday afternoon.

Joyce also homered in the fifth - his second in two days - as the Rays (15-12) won for the sixth time in seven games. Joel Peralta (1-0) got the win in relief.

Angels starter Joel Pineiro pitched seven strong innings in his first game since returning from the disabled list. He allowed four hits and a run. Howard Kendrick and Erick Aybar had two hits each for Los Angeles (15-12). Rodney (0-1) took the loss.

Rays starter James Shields, the reigning American League player of the week, equaled a career high with 12 strikeouts and took a 1-0 lead into the ninth. But after a lead-off double by Torii Hunter, he was relieved by Kyle Farnsworth. Hunter eventually scored on Kendrick's ground out. Second baseman Ben Zobrist had a chance to throw Hunter out at the plate, but bobbled the ball.

Shields retired the first 13 batters, but three straight singles loaded the bases in the top of the fifth. The righthander responded by striking out Peter Bourjos and Alexi Amarista to end the threat.
