Jed Lowrie hit a three-run homer in the first inning as the Oakland Athletics built an eight-run lead and held off the host Detroit Tigers 8-6 on Thursday.

Mark Canha also homered, and Yan Gomes supplied two hits and two RBIs for the A's (74-60). Khris Davis, elevated from Triple-A Las Vegas on Wednesday, added two hits and an RBI.

Frankie Montas (11-9) gave up three runs on five hits and struck out seven in 6 2/3 innings. Sergio Romo pitched the ninth for his second save.

Jeimer Candelario hit a three-run homer for the Tigers (63-72). Akil Baddoo contributed a two-run blast and Harold Castro also homered for Detroit.

Tigers starter Matt Manning (3-6) surrendered eight runs in 3 2/3 innings.

The A's grabbed a 4-0 lead with their first six batters. Starling Marte and Matt Chapman drew walks before Lowrie smashed his homer to left center. Canha followed with his solo blast to right.

Oakland made it 5-0 in the second. Elvis Andrus reached on a one-out single and scored on Marte's two-out double to left.

After retiring the first two batters in the third, Manning gave up two more runs. Canha drew a walk and Tony Kemp singled to set up Gomes' two-run double to left-center.

Victor Reyes hit a one-out triple in the bottom of the inning but was thrown out at home on Baddoo's fielder's choice grounder.

The A's extended their lead to 8-0 in the fourth. Two-out singles by Matt Olson and Chapman preceded Davis' ground-rule double that knocked in Olson. Davis was pinch-hitting for Lowrie.

Castro led off the bottom of the fifth with his third homer of the season, a 447-foot shot to center, to put Detroit on the board.

With two out and a runner on first in the seventh, Baddoo hit an opposite-field homer to cut the Tigers' deficit to five runs. That ended Montas' day but the Tigers kept the pressure on against Deolis Guerra. Zack Short and Robbie Grossman singled ahead of Candelario's 11th homer, which exited over the right-center wall.

The Tigers had a baserunner in the ninth but the rally stalled.
