Gleyber Torres had three hits and drove in two runs as the host Detroit Tigers downed the San Diego Padres, 6-4, on Monday night.

Zach McKinstry supplied three hits, scored a run and drove in another for Detroit in the opener of a three-game series.

Starter Keider Montero gave up four runs (three earned) in 4 1/3 innings. Brenan Hanifee (1-0) was awarded the victory with two innings of scoreless relief. Will Vest got the last three outs for his second save.

Gavin Sheets homered for the Padres. Starter Randy Vasquez (1-2) gave up six runs in two-plus innings.

The Padres struck first. Fernando Tatis Jr. led off the game with a single, Manny Machado drew a one-out walk and Xander Bogaerts singled to load the bases. Tirso Ornelas grounded into a fielder's choice for his first career RBI.

Detroit scored twice in the bottom of the inning. Torres led off with a single and McKinstry followed with an RBI triple to right-center. After Vasquez set down the next two batters, Colt Keith singled to score McKinstry.

San Diego tied it in the second on Tatis' RBI groundout. The Tigers then made it 4-2 in the bottom of the inning.

Javier Baez was hit by a pitch and moved to third on a passed ball and groundout. Tomas Nido singled to knock him home. McKinstry drew a two-out walk before Riley Greene singled to bring home Nido.

Detroit scored two more runs in the third. The Tigers loaded the bases on two walks and another hit-by-pitch. Torres then knocked in Jace Jung and Trey Sweeney with a single to center.

Detroit loaded the bases again in the fourth but couldn't push across another run. Sheets' homer in the fifth that cleared the left field wall made it 6-3. San Diego tacked on another run in the inning on Oscar Gonzalez's RBI single.

The Padres turned double plays in the sixth and seventh innings to stay within two runs.

Vest pitched a clean ninth, striking out Tatis to end the contest.
