Carlos Rodon allowed an unearned run over seven innings and Aaron Judge hit an RBI triple, lifting the visiting New York Yankees to a 5-1 win over the Cleveland Guardians on Wednesday afternoon.
Rodon (3-3) was sharp for the second consecutive start. He allowed just four hits in his longest outing of the season while extending his streak without allowing an earned run to 13 innings. He struck out eight and walked two in an efficient 90-pitch performance that ended with him retiring 14 of the final 15 hitters.
Judge hit an RBI triple in his first at-bat, singled in his second trip to the plate and walked in his third plate appearance. He also hit into a double play and struck out with the bases loaded in the seventh to end the day with a .415 average and a 1.247 OPS.
Paul Goldschmidt had three hits for the Yankees, including an RBI double in the first inning and a run-scoring single in the second off Cleveland starter Luis Ortiz (2-3).
Ben Rice contributed an RBI single and Austin Wells chipped in a run-scoring double as the Yankees won for the seventh time in 10 games.
Jose Ramirez hit a first-inning single that scored Gabriel Arias all the way from first due to a two-base error by center fielder Cody Bellinger. The Guardians, however, were unable to complete their first three-game sweep of the Yankees at home since Sept. 1970.
Ortiz allowed four runs on five hits in 4 1/3 innings. He needed 104 pitches to get that far as the right-hander struck out eight and walked five.
Judge lifted a towering triple off the center-field wall to score Rice for a 1-0 lead. Goldschmidt made it 2-0 by ripping a double off the top of the right-center field wall to drive in Judge.
Rice hit an RBI single off first baseman Carlos Santana's glove in the second and scored on Goldschmidt's single to left to increase the lead to 4-1. The Yankees added an insurance run in the seventh. Jazz Chisholm Jr. walked, stole second and scored on Wells' double over Steven Kwan's head in left.
Rodon allowed a one-out single in the first to Arias, who scored when Bellinger overran Ramirez's single to center. The Guardians put two runners on in the second, but Rodon struck out Brayan Rocchio and retired Kwan.
Fernando Cruz struck out the side in the eighth and Luke Weaver gave up three warning-track fly balls in the ninth to preserve the win.
