CLEVELAND -- Carlos Carrasco has been the one dependable starter in the Indians' underachieving rotation, and on Monday, the right-hander anchored another Cleveland win.

Seven strong innings by Carrasco, and home runs by Austin Jackson, Carlos Santana and Edwin Encarnacion, lifted the Indians to a 5-3 victory over the Oakland A's at Progressive Field.

Oakland also hit three home runs, by Yonder Alonso, Ryon Healy and Khris Davis.

However, Carrasco (5-2) set the tone early, holding Oakland scoreless on two hits through the first six innings.

"My fastball command was good, and I had my slider working, too," Carrasco said. "They are an aggressive team, but with my slider, I was able to get a lot of strikeouts and ground balls."

In seven innings overall, Carrasco gave up two runs on four hits with seven strikeouts and one walk.

"He's built to log innings, and with his stuff he should be able to do what he's doing," manager Terry Francona said. "I don't think this is just a good streak for him. This is the kind of pitcher he can be."

In five career appearances against Oakland, four of them starts, Carrasco is 3-0 with a 1.80 ERA.

"He's good," A's manager Bob Melvin said. "He has a good fastball, a good breaking ball. He spins the ball well. He kept us off balance."

Cody Allen pitched the ninth inning, and despite giving up a home run, picked up his 14th save, tying him for the American League lead. With runners at first and second and two outs, Allen struck out Trevor Plouffe to end the game.

"In my opinion, he's one of the best in the game," Francona said of Allen. "But sometimes you're going to give up runs. Those things happen."

A's starter Daniel Mengden (0-1) was called up from Triple-A Nashville to pitch Monday, replacing Kendall Graveman, who was placed on the disabled list with a strained right shoulder.

Mengden started this season on the disabled list as he recovered from preseason foot surgery.

On Monday against Cleveland, Mengden was not in the game for long. He threw 72 pitches in 3 1/3 innings and gave up five runs and seven hits. That included yielding three home runs in the span of six batters in the third and fourth innings.

"I don't think he got tired. His pitches just started to find the middle of the plate," Melvin said.

Jackson led off the third inning with a home run, his third of the season, over the right field wall, giving Cleveland a 1-0 lead.

In the fourth, Mengden gave up home runs to the first two hitters of the inning. Santana hit a 3-1 pitch into the seats in right field for his sixth home run. Encarnacion then hit his 10th homer, a mammoth drive over the center field wall that was estimated at 451 feet, boosting the Indians' lead to 3-0.

"If we can get those two hot at the same time ...," Francona said of Santana and Encarnacion. "We did some good things early today."

Jose Ramirez followed Encarnacion's homer with a double into the left-center field gap. Yan Gomes singled, scoring Ramirez to make it 4-0.

Bradley Zimmer then hit a sharp grounder back to the mound that hit Mengden on the left calf and ricocheted into left field. Gomes advanced to third and Zimmer hustled to second with a double. Ramirez scored on a sacrifice fly by Jackson.

Melvin said Mengden's calf is fine.

In the seventh inning, the A's hit back-to-back home runs to cut the Indians' lead to 5-2. Alonso hit his 14th homer into the seats in right field, and Healy belted his ninth home run, over the left field wall.

Davis hit his 16th home run off Allen in the ninth to make it 5-3.

NOTES: In a ceremony before the game, Oakland OF Rajai Davis, whose game-tying home run off Chicago Cubs LHP Aroldis Chapman in the eighth inning of Game 7 of last year's World Series is one of the most famous homers in Indians history, was presented with his American League championship ring. ... A's 1B Yonder Alonso leads the majors with 10 home runs in May. Before this year, Alonso had never hit more than nine home runs in a season. ... The Indians have homered in 14 consecutive games. That is their longest such streak since they homered in 15 straight games in June and July 2007. ... RHP Cody Allen has 106 career saves and moved past Jose Mesa (104) into fourth place on the Cleveland franchise list.
