Temple held off Maryland’s late surge Sunday in the BB&T Classic, Lavoy Allen’s basket with 1:42 to go giving the Owls the lead for keeps in a 64-61 victory at Verizon Center in Washington, D.C.

Temple (5-2) led by as many as 15 in the first half and by nine inside the final seven minutes, but the Terrapins (6-3) fought back to forge a 56-56 tie on James Padgett’s dunk with 1:52 to play.

Allen’s basket 10 seconds later put Temple ahead to stay. The Owls would push the lead to 63-58 on Ramone Moore’s two free throws with 17 seconds to play, winning for the third time in four games.

Temple used a 15-4 first-half run to build a 21-10 lead on Moore’s jumper with 7:41 left in the half. The Owls led 40-25 with 16:01 to play, but the Terrapins scored 10 unanswered points, pulling within 40-35 on Haukur Palsson’s 3-pointer with 13:59 left.

The Owls pushed the lead back to 53-44 on Khalif Wyatt’s 3-pointer with 6:15 remaining, but the Terrapins again pulled close.

Moore led Temple with 16 points, leading four Owls in double figures. Allen finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

The loss snapped Maryland’s three-game winning streak. Jordan Williams led the Terrapins with 17 points and 11 rebounds.

Temple plays host to No. 14 Georgetown on Thursday. Maryland plays host to UNC-Greensboro Wednesday, then opens Atlantic Coast Conference play Sunday at home against Boston College.
