Malcolm Grant shook off a poor shooting night with a key 3-pointer and Julian Gamble delivered a big blocked shot in the closing seconds as host Miami (Fla.) held off visiting Boston College, 72-71, to collect its first ACC victory.
After missing his first six 3-point tries, Grant, who finished just 3 for 14 from the floor, broke a 64-64 tie with 2:03 remaining for the Hurricanes (12-5, 1-2 ACC).
The Eagles (13-5, 3-1), who were dealt their first conference defeat, had tied it 23 seconds earlier on a free throw by Reggie Jackson – his first point of the second half after scoring 14 in the first.
Following a Miami turnover as it clung to a one-point lead, Jackson (game-high 22 points) drove in for a layup but was denied by Gamble with nine seconds left. Miami's Garrius Adams and Reggie Johnson went 4 for 4 from the foul line to seal the victory.
Durand Scott led the Hurricanes with 19 points, while Adrian Thomas added 13 off the bench.
The Eagles had swept last season's series by a combined five points – at home, 61-60, and at Miami, 79-75.
