Adrian Bowie scored 14 of his 22 points in the second half as visiting Maryland improved its NCAA Tournament chances with a 66-42 victory over Virginia on Thursday.
Cliff Tucker added 13 points off the bench for the Terrapins (13-7, 3-3 ACC), who shot 54 percent and forced 17 turnovers.
Maryland used a 14-2 run in the first half to take a 26-18 advantage, and went into the break up 26-21. The Cavaliers struggled from the field in the first half at 34.8 percent, but were able to hang around thanks to the strong inside play of Assane Sene, who pulled down 10 of his 15 rebounds before the break.
Virginia (11-9, 2-4) cut it to 26-24 in the first two minutes of the second half before the Terrapins pulled away as Bowie scored seven straight points during a 9-0 spurt that pushed the lead to double digits.
The edge reached 20 when Cliff Tucker converted a three-point play with 3:35 left.
The Cavaliers, who did not have a double-figure scorer, could not string together any consistent offense in the second half.
Maryland has plenty of work still to be done in hopes of securing a spot in the tournament, with a date at Georgia Tech on Sunday and No. 3 Duke headed to College Park on Feb. 2.
