Jarryd Cole scored 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as Iowa closed the regular season with a 67-65 upset of No. 6 Purdue on Saturday afternoon in Iowa City.
A D.J. Byrd 3-pointer gave the Boilermakers their only lead of the second half, 56-55, with 4:48 left, but the Hawkeyes (11-19, 4-14 Big Ten) quickly responded with a Cole jumper and a putback dunk by Melsahn Basabe. Purdue got back within two in the final minute, but Matt Gatens converted a pair of free throws with 6.5 seconds remaining to ice it.
Gatens and Bryce Cartwright added 13 points each for Iowa. JaJuan Johnson finished with 22 points and 12 rebounds for the Boilermakers (25-6, 14-4), who made just 5 of 25 3-point attempts and shot 36 percent overall.
Purdue had already wrapped up a first-round bye for the conference tournament. But the upset enabled top-ranked Ohio State to clinch the Big Ten title outright.
