J.T. Dudley hit all four of his 3-point attempts and finished with 17 points as Wichita State earned fifth place in the EA Sports Maui Invitational with a 70-58 victory over Virginia on Wednesday.
Toure’ Murray added 13 points and eight rebounds off the bench for the Shockers (3-1), who lost to Connecticut in the tournament opener but beat host school Chaminade on Tuesday to earn a shot at Virginia (3-3).
While the Cavaliers don’t appear to be among the elite teams in the Atlantic Coast Conference yet this season, a win over any ACC school is good for the NCAA Tournament hopes of Wichita State, which plays in the Missouri Valley Conference and needs quality wins for an at-large berth.
The Shockers fell behind, 18-2, during the first seven minutes of the opening half but regrouped quickly, getting 10 points from Murray and nine from Dudley the rest of the way to grab a 35-31 lead at the break. A 14-2 spurt early in the second half gave Wichita State some breathing room.
Mike Scott finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds for Virginia, which finished in sixth place.
