Chace Stanbeck led a balanced offense as UNLV captured the 76 Classic Championship on Sunday night with a 71-59 victory over Virginia Tech at the Anaheim Convention Center.
The Runnin’ Rebels (6-0) led 37-30 at the half and fought off any run the Hokies tried to make over the final 20 minutes.
Stanbeck scored 17 points and was one of four Rebels in double figures. Quintrell Thomas and Tre’von Willis scored 14 points and Anthony Marshall added 10 for UNLV, which was just 5-of-11 from the free throw line and made just 4-of-17 three-pointers but still shot 53 percent (31-of-58) from the field.
Malcolm Delaney was pretty much a one-man show for Virginia Tech and it was not enough to overcome the balance of UNLV.
Delaney scored 30 points, shooting 9-of-14 from the field, including a sizzling 7-of-9 from the 3-point arc. Terrell Bell added 12 points for the Hokies (4-2).
Virginia Tech shot 49 percent (20-of-41) from the field and made 10 three pointers but was done in by its poor free-throw shooting. The Hokies made just 9-of-21 attempts from the line.
