Virginia blew a 10-point lead in the final 42 seconds of regulation and fell in overtime to Miami, 69-62, in Thursday’s ACC tournament first-round game at the Greensboro Coliseum.
The eighth-seeded Cavaliers (16-15) enjoyed their biggest lead of the game at 50-39 with 2:39 remaining and appeared to have all the answers for the ninth-seeded Hurricanes. But a slew of turnovers, missed free throws and questionable decisions opened the door for the stunning defeat.
Miami (19-13), which will face top-seeded North Carolina on Friday, scored 10 consecutive points within the final 29 seconds of regulation to force overtime.
Junior guard Malcolm Grant had 16 points to pace the Hurricanes, who have now won their tournament first-round games in five of the past six years.
Mustapha Farrakhan had 14 points to lead the Cavs, while Sammy Zeglinski added 13 in the loss.
Virginia struggled at the free throw line late in the game, allowing Miami to pull within 53-51 with 19 seconds left.
Durand Scott got a steal off of a Virginia inbounds play and scored with 13 seconds left to even the game at 53 apiece.
