Clemson delivered a major blow to Boston College’s NCAA tournament hopes and boosted its own with a 70-47 drubbing of the Eagles in a Friday quarterfinal at the ACC tournament in Greensboro, N.C.
The impressive win will have the Tigers (21-10) resting much easier this weekend, as they appear headed for their fourth consecutive NCAA tournament appearance.
Senior guard Demontez Stitt totaled 20 points along with eight rebounds and four assists to lead Clemson into Saturday’s semifinal against top seed North Carolina. Forward Jerai Grant added four blocked shots to his 12 points to pace Clemson, now winners of four of its last five games.
Joe Trapani had 20 points and five boards in the losing effort for No. 5 seed BC (20-12), which shot a paltry 34 percent (17 of 50) overall for the game and 25 percent (6 of 24) from downtown.
The Eagles struggled offensively from the game’s outset, going nearly six minutes without a single point and almost seven without a field goal to start the contest. BC shot just 36 percent from the floor overall and a mere 18 percent from beyond the arc in falling behind by eight points at the half.
