David Hanson hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 1:26 left and visiting Cal Poly upset Southern California, 42-36 on Saturday.
Hanson finished with 12 points for the Mustangs (2-1), who overcame a horrendous first half in which they had more turnovers (6) than field goals (5). Byron Wesley’s free throws gave Southern California a 35-33 lead with 1:45 to play, but Hanson drilled a 3-pointer 19 seconds later. Cal Poly then hit six straight free throws to seal it.
It was another agonizing loss for the snake-bitten Trojans (1-3), who are struggling without leading returning scorer Jio Fontan (torn ACL). Aaron Fuller scored 15 points for USC, which has lost three straight – all in the final seconds. Kevin O’Neil’s team lost to San Diego State on a last-second layup Thursday, three days after a double-overtime loss to Nebraska.
The Mustangs won with the same formula that helped them finish second in the Big West last season – a grind-it-out offense and suffocating defense. Cal Poly held the Trojans without a field goal for nearly seven minutes in the second half.
