Joel Smith hit seven 3-pointers en route to 29 points and added 10 rebounds as Northeastern upset host St. John’s, 78-64, on Saturday.
Jonathan Lee chipped in 17 points and six rebounds for the Huskies (3-1), who controlled the glass, 44-29, in the school’s first meeting with St. John’s since the 1925-26 season.
Northeastern established early that it would not be going away, jumping out to an 11-2 edge in the first few minutes and taking a 33-31 lead into the break. The Red Storm (4-3) would grab a brief lead at the beginning of the second half but the Huskies refused to back down.
Smith’s 3-pointer put them back on top and he would hit two more over the next six minutes to keep Northeastern clear.
Smith hit another from long range to spark an 11-0 burst, stretching the lead to 70-55 with 4:24 remaining.
God’sgift Achiuwa collected 17 points and nine rebounds off the bench for St. John’s.
The Red Storm, whose previous two losses came against No. 16 Arizona and No. 18 Texas A&M, now have to travel to face No. 2 Kentucky on Thursday.
