Andre Young matched a career high with five 3-pointers and Clemson's dominant defense did its job to lead the Tigers to a 71-55 victory over host Iowa in the teams' first meeting in three decades on Tuesday.
The game was part of the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. Iowa (4-3) drops to 2-9 all-time in the Challenge, while Clemson (4-2) improves to 9-4.
The Tigers' smothering defense was in top form, holding the Hawkeyes to a season-low 55 points - their average was 80.2 - on a meager 28.6 percent shooting. Matt Gatens, Iowa's leading scorer, was limited to eight points. Gatens had scored in double digits in five straight games.
Young scored most of his game-high 19 points from behind the arc, hitting 5-of-6 from 3-point range. The five 3-pointers match a career high set against Missouri in the first round of the 2010 NCAA tournament. Young has made at least one 3-pointer in 40 of his past 41 games.
Clemson's Devin Booker just missed his first double-double of the year with nine points and 12 rebounds, and Tanner Smith matched a career with 14 rebounds and also had eight assists and seven points.
Clemson has won 12 of its past 13 non-conference road games.
