Peyton Siva, battling a gimpy ankle, drove for the winning layup with 1.4 seconds remaining in overtime to lift No. 6 Louisville to a 62-60 victory over No. 22 Vanderbilt on Friday in the SEC/Big East Challenge.
Louisville (7-0) trailed by nine points with eight minutes to go in regulation before tying it at 47 after a 6-0 spurt capped by Chane Benahan’s steal and breakaway dunk. From there, the lead changed hands three times and there were four ties in the final 2:28 of regulation and overtime.
Kyle Kuric led the Cardinals with 15 points, including a 3-pointer and a jumper in the lane during overtime. Siva and Benahan contributed 14 points apiece.
Vanderbilt’s John Jenkins led all scorers with 27 points, including the Commodores’ first seven in overtime. Lance Goulbourne and Jeffery Taylor added 11 points apiece as the trio represented nearly 85 percent of Vanderbilt's total output.
The Commodores (5-3) are down to one center - Steve Tchiengang - with Festus Ezeli still nursing his sprained knee and the news that redshirt freshman Josh Henderson will miss the next 8-to-12 weeks with a foot injury that will require surgery.
