Melsahn Basabe had a team-high 14 points and Iowa avoided back-to-back losses with a 75-54 victory over Brown Saturday at Carver Hawkeye Arena.
Basabe went 5-of-12 from the field and finished with 10 boards for the Hawkeyes (5-3), who took a 38-24 halftime lead. The Hawkeyes extended their lead to 22 points early in the second half and the Bears (4-5) couldn’t recover.
Roy Devyn Marble finished with 11 points and seven rebounds for Iowa, which improved to 12-1 all-time against Ivy League schools.
Brown, which came in off a 65-56 upset win over Rhode Island, relied on the 3-point shot but couldn’t convert, missing 18-of-22 attempts from beyond the arc. Andrew McCarthy scored a game-high 17 points and Sean McGonagill added nine for the Bears, who have been outscored by an average of 20 points on the road and have yet to produce a road win.
Matt Gatens, the Hawkeyes leading scorer at more than 15 points per game, finished with nine points on 3-of-8 shooting for Iowa, which was relentless on the offensive boards, finishing with an 18-9 advantage.
The Hawkeyes improved to 10-0 when holding their opponent to less than 60 points points under coach Fran McCaffery.
