Antwaine Wiggins tied a career high with 24 points and the College of Charleston used a 20-2 second-half run to defeat visiting Tennessee 71-65 on Wednesday.
The Cougars (8-1) won their fifth straight and registered their second victory against a team from a major conference this season. The Cougars won at Clemson 72-69 on Nov. 19.
Wiggins was 10-for-12 from the field, including 3-of-4 from 3-point range, and had eight rebounds.
Down 47-43 six minutes into the second half, the Cougars scored 13 consecutive points, including six by Wiggins. Andrew Lawrence scored four of his 14 points during the surge, and his two free throws with 9:31 to go gave the Cougars a 56-47 advantage.
After a Trae Golden steal and dunk for Tennessee, Charleston scored seven consecutive points. Matt Sundberg’s 3-pointer with 6:03 to go capped the 20-2 run and gave the Cougars a 63-49 lead.
Jordan McRae scored 19 points to lead Tennessee (3-6). McRae’s 3-pointer with 1:14 to go brought the Volunteers within 68-65 but they could get no closer.
Tennessee, which committed 16 turnovers, has lost four in a row and six of its past seven.
Lawrence added five steals and four assists.
