Matt Gatens scored 20 points to lead five players in double figures as Iowa snapped an in-state losing streak with an 82-68 victory over visiting Drake on Saturday.
The Hawkeyes (6-5), who were coming off back-to-back losses at Northern Iowa and Iowa State, struggled with their outside shooting (3-for-13 on 3-pointers) but shot 50 percent for the night, generating a number of easy baskets with their defense. Iowa forced 19 turnovers and finished with 12 steals.
Melsahn Basabe's dunk with 5:29 left in the first half began a 15-3 run that sent the Hawkeyes into the locker room with a 44-30 cushion. Gatens scored 12 first-half points as Iowa avoided losing to all three of their intrastate rivals in the same season for the first time.
Rayvonte Rice finished with a game-high 23 points for the Bulldogs (6-4), who were unable to get any closer than nine points in the second half.
