Mike Scott scored a career-best 34 points and added 14 rebounds as Virginia struggled to beat host Seattle University 83-77 on Thursday for its eighth straight victory.
Joe Harris added 15 points as the Cavaliers (10-1) squandered a 14-point second-half lead before recovering to send the Redhawks to their sixth straight loss.
Aaron Broussard scored a career-high 29 points and Sterling Carter had 17 for Seattle (2-8). The Redhawks easily topped the Cavaliers’ previous high points allowed of 58.
Scott was 12-of-14 from the field, 10-of-12 from the line and registered his 29th career double-double as Virginia is off to its best start since the 2000-01 campaign.
The Cavaliers led 63-49 before the Redhawks went on a 19-4 run and took the lead on Broussard’s basket with 3:28 remaining. Sammy Zeglinski put the Cavaliers back ahead with a 3-pointer and Virginia soon had a five-point lead.
Seattle got within 78-77 on Broussard’s basket with 51.8 seconds left but Scott hit five free throws to seal it.
The Cavaliers were 28-of-37 from the free-throw line. Seattle shot only 15 free throws, making 11.
The Redhawks never trailed in the first half and led 38-36 at halftime.
