Christian Watford scored 19 of his 22 points in the second half and added nine rebounds as No. 18 Indiana turned a healthy lead into a rout for an 89-47 victory over Maryland-Baltimore County on Thursday.
Jordan Hulls scored 16 points and Cody Zeller added 13 and six rebounds for the Hoosiers (12-0), who remain one of six undefeated teams in the country. Indiana begins Big Ten play next week at No. 20 Michigan State before returning home for a New Year’s Eve date with No. 2 Ohio State.
The Hoosiers shot just 35 percent in the first half but managed to get to the free-throw line 23 times, cashing in 17 of the opportunities to open up a 37-23 lead at the break.
The Retrievers pulled within 40-30 early in the second half before Indiana put its foot on the gas, going on a 42-7 run over the next 11 minutes to put the game away. Watford scored 18 points during the burst and Matt Roth came off the bench to hit three 3-pointers.
UMBC missed 10 straight field-goal attempts at one point during the stretch.
The Hoosiers shot 61 percent in the second half.
Chase Plummer collected 10 points and seven rebounds for the Retrievers (1-10).
