Matt Gatens scored 13 of his game-high 19 points in the second half and Iowa held off a late rally to secure a 64-62 victory at Minnesota on Wednesday.
The Hawkeyes (10-6, 2-1 Big Ten) took the lead for good with a 10-0 run that made it 44-38 with 15:13 remaining. Gatens scored six points during that surge and added a layup with 2:56 left that helped Iowa hold on down the stretch.
Iowa missed six straight free throws in the final 39 seconds to leave the outcome in doubt, but a missed layup at the buzzer by Maverick Ahanmisi cost the Golden Gophers (12-4, 0-3) a chance at overtime.
Minnesota did itself in by relying too heavily on its frigid outside shooting. The Golden Gophers finished just 4-for-23 from 3-point range, missing 16 of their first 18, and attempted just four free throws in the game's first 36 minutes.
Zach McCabe finished with 12 points and seven rebounds for Iowa. Julian Welch led Minnesota with 14 points and six steals, while Rodney Williams added 11 points and 12 rebounds.
