Washington was struggling midway through the second half until coach Lorenzo Romar was called for a technical foul, at which point the Huskies went on a 21-4 run to take control of the game and hand visiting Washington State a 75-65 Pac-12 Conference loss Sunday.
Terrence Ross was the only Husky to score for the first seven minutes of the second half as Washington State used a 2-3 zone to frustrate Washington and hold a 47-37 lead after the technical foul, which came with 12:16 left.
Romar, upset that Ross was called for an offensive foul, put on a display of emotion on the sideline that was soon mirrored by the Huskies (11-7, 4-1 Pac-12).
Ross, a 1-for-9 shooter in the first half, finished with a career-best 30 points, 26 in the second half, and also had a career high 14 rebounds.
With leading scoring Tony Wroten limited to 13 points on 3-for-14 shooting and C.J. Wilcox out with a hip injury, Washington forward Darnell Gant came off the bench to add 13 points and eight rebounds.
Washington State (9-8, 1-4 Pac-12) saw forward Brock Motum hit all five of his first-half shots to lead the Cougars to a 31-25 lead at the break. It was guard Davonte Lacy who opened the game up with back-to-back 3-pointers to expand a 22-20 lead to 28-20.
Motum followed that with a 3-pointer for a 31-20 lead, but the Cougars went scoreless in the final 4:36 to settle for a six-point lead at the half.
That chill would continue in the second half with the Cougars sinking just 11 of 25 second-half shots. Motum, who had 13 in the first half, was hurt by foul trouble and finished with 17 points, one behind team leader Faisal Aden’s 18.
