Mason Plumlee collected 15 points and 17 rebounds as No. 6 Duke topped St. John’s, 83-76.
Ryan Kelly chipped in 16 points and Andre Dawkins scored 14 for the Blue Devils (18-3), who got revenge after falling to an unranked Red Storm team, 93-78, at Madison Square Garden last season.
This year's St. John’s squad, which starts five freshman and no longer has any of the eight players that saw the court in the win at Madison Square Garden, has dropped six of its last eight games.
It saw a small deficit snowball into a big one late in the first half.
Duke was up just 23-20 with 8:59 left in the first half and looked
vulnerable after surrendering baskets on five straight possessions. But
the Blue Devils quickly turned the tables, embarking on a 20-3 run to
push the lead to 43-23.
Dawkins bookended the run with a pair of 3-pointers and Duke took a 45-29 lead into the half.
The Blue Devils led by as much as 22 points early in the second half but went the final 6:26 without a field goal as the young Red Storm made it interesting.
The lead was cut to 79-75 with 20.5 seconds left but Duke was able to seal it at the free throw line.
Moe Harkless recorded 30 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Red Storm (9-12).
