Scott Wood scored 16 points and North Carolina State ended a two-game losing streak with a 56-51 victory over host Boston College on Wednesday.
C.J. Leslie scored 13 points and Richard Howell and C.J. Williams each added 10 for the Wolfpack (16-7, 5-3 ACC), which pulled away late with an 11-4 run. The victory helped North Carolina State match its conference win total from all of last season.
Matt Humphrey scored 15 points for Boston College (7-15, 2-6). The Eagles are starting four freshmen in a major rebuilding season under second-year coach Steve Donahue and this marked their fifth straight defeat. It was much more competitive than Sunday's 76-54 loss to Miami, though.
Boston College succeeded in slowing down the ACC’s third-highest scoring offense by turning the game into an ugly, half-court struggle. The result was a nip-and-tuck game that featured 12 lead changes and six ties.
The Eagles led 42-41 with 6:23 left on a putback from Ryan Anderson, but the Wolfpack responded with the game-clinching run. Wood’s free throws (he extended his ACC record to 63 straight made) capped the 11-4 spurt and gave North Carolina State a 52-46 lead with just over a minute to play.
Humphrey hit a 3-pointer with seven econds left to cut the lead to 54-51, but Lorenzo Brown sealed the win with a pair of free throws.
