Virginia 75, Maryland 72 (OT): Mike Scott scored 22 of his 35 points in the second half and overtime as Virginia locked up the No. 4 seed and a first-round bye in the upcoming ACC tournament by beating Virginia.
Terrell Stoglin, the ACC’s leading scorer, led the Terrapins with 25 points but struggled throughout the day, hitting just eight of 24 field goals. Still, the guard drained a 3-pointer to tie the game at 61 with seven seconds left in regulation. At the other end, Darion Atkins missed a potential go-ahead lay up and Stoglin missed a 3-point attempt at the buzzer.
In overtime, Nick Faust’s free throws got Maryland within one at 64-63 before Scott hit consecutive field goals, the last off a pass from Joe Harris that made it 69-63 with 1:50 left.
Sean Mosley added 17 points and 10 rebounds for Maryland, which finished 6-10 and will be the league’s No. 8 seed.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Maryland trailed by as many as 11 in the opening half due to poor shooting. While Mosley had eight points and made four of eight field goals, the rest of the Terps were just six of 22 (27 percent) from the field before halftime… Scott nearly had a double-double by halftime as he added nine rebounds to his 13 first half points… The Cavaliers got eight of Sammy Zeglinski’s 20 points points during a 12-1 spurt that made it 53-41 at the 8:10 mark of the second half… Maryland, which came into the game 11th in the ACC in free throw shooting, made only 14 of 26.
