Guard Tim Frazier scored a career-high 27 points, including back-to-back baskets to spark a late 7-0 run, lifting Penn State to a 53-49 win over South Florida in the consolation game of the Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament.
Frazier converted 8 of 14 field goals and made 10 of 15 free throws to surpass his career-high of 25 he scored Nov. 16 against Long Island. The 6-foot junior also had six rebounds and three steals. Jermaine Marshall added 14 points for the Nittany Lions (4-1).
South Florida (3-2) got 14 points from Blake Nash, who made three 3-pointers, and 11 points from Toarlyn Fitzpatrick. The Bulls led 44-43 before the Nittany Lions scored the next seven points. USF never got closer than three.
The teams were tied 17-17 at halftime as both clubs struggled from the floor. South Florida made only 4 of 14 (28.6 percent) of its field goal attempts and Penn State made only 5 of 20 (25.0 percent).
It was only the second time Penn State has defeated South Florida in five meetings.
