Penn State 58, Pennsylvania 47: Jermaine Marshall scored 18 points, making 9-of-10 free throws, as the host Nittany Lions held off the in-state rival Quakers.
Marshall was 4-for-4 from the foul line in the final 2:12 while D.J. Newbill and Brandon Taylor added 13 and 11 points, respectively, for Penn State (4-3).
Tony Hicks led Pennsylvania (2-6) with 10 points. The Quakers shot just 21.7 percent (5-for-23) from 3-point range.
Marshall scored five points during a 9-1 run as the Nittany Lions opened up a 23-16 lead with six minutes left in the first half. After entering halftime with a nine-point advantage, back-to-back dunks from Newbill helped to push the lead to 35-23 just 3:23 into the second half.
Six straight Pennsylvania points halved the deficit and two free throws from Dau Jok pulled the Quakers within 43-39 with 7:26 left, but three straight baskets by the Nittany Lions and Marshall’s four free throws down the stretch sealed the victory.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Penn State has now won the last three matchups with the Quakers and seven of the last eight. … The Nittany Lions were 5-of-7 beyond the arc in the first half but 0-of-8 in the second half. … Taylor scored all 11 of his points in the first half.
