Georgia Tech 62, Georgia 54: Freshman Marcus Georges-Hunt scored a career-high 18 points, and the host Yellow Jackets used strong 3-point shooting to hold off their in-state rival.
Chris Bolden, Mfon Udofia and Georges-Hunt hit 3-pointers to fuel a 16-4 first-half surge, giving the Yellow Jackets a 29-16 advantage with 3:27 left before the break. Last in the Atlantic Coast Conference at 24 percent from 3-point range entering the night, Georgia Tech (5-2) hit 9 of 21 3-point attempts (42.9 percent).
Down 55-42 with 5:21 remaining, Georgia (2-6) scored eight straight points to close within 55-50 with 2:07 left. But Udofia’s three-point play with 58.2 seconds left pushed the Yellow Jackets’ advantage to 58-50.
Georges-Hunt finished with three 3-pointers. Udofia also hit three 3-pointers, finishing with 12 points for Georgia Tech, which won for the second time in its past three games.
Georgia lost for the sixth time in seven games. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope led the Bulldogs with 16 points and 13 rebounds.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Georgia Tech hit six 3-pointers and went 11-for-14 from the free-throw line in the first half. The Bulldogs made just one 3-pointer and shot 3-for-5 from the line in the opening 20 minutes. … The Bulldogs started the night ranked 325th in the nation in scoring offense (57.1). … Georgia finished just 2-for-17 from 3-point range (11.8 percent).
