Penn State 78, Army 70: D.J. Newbill scored 14 of his 19 points in the second half and the host Nittany Lions held off a second-half challenge from the Black Knights.
Jermaine Marshall added 16 and Brandon Taylor chipped in 14 as Penn State (5-4) rebounded from a blowout loss at LaSalle by shooting a season-best 50.9 percent. Ross Travis collected 14 points and 10 rebounds as the Nittany Lions dominated the glass by a 36-25 margin.
Ella Ellis led the Black Knights with 23 points but fouled out with 6:41 remaining. Kyle Toth added 13 points for Army (4-4), which shot 38.9 percent.
Penn State never trailed as it scored the game's first seven points. The lead was 33-18 on Marshall's jumper with 4:20 remaining in the first half but the Nittany Lions settled for a 40-28 lead at halftime.
Despite leading by double digits for most of the first half, Penn State was unable to put away Army until late in the second half. Army was within 58-54 on a free throw by Jordan Springer with 9:52 remaining but the Nittany Lions scored 10 straight points to clinch the win.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Marshall has led the Nittany Lions in four of five games and is shooting 50 percent (28-of-56) in those games. ... Penn State has won four straight in the series while Army has lost 11 straight against Big Ten teams. ... Newbill came within three points of his career-high set Nov. 28 against Boston College.
