Miami 62, Georgia Tech 49: Rion Brown came off the bench to score a career-high 22 points to lead the Hurricanes past the host Yellow Jackets and give Miami coach Jim Larranaga his 500th career victory in the Atlantic Coast Conference opener for both teams.
Larranaga, who is in his second season at Miami and 29th as a head coach, is 500-350 overall. Brown, the son of former Georgia Tech player Tico Brown, was 9-for-11 shooting from the field and made four 3-pointers to help Miami (10-3, 1-0 ACC) improve to 4-1 on the road. Kenny Kadji had 11 points and a season-high 14 rebounds for the Hurricanes.
Georgia Tech (10-3, 0-1 ACC) had its longest winning streak (six games) in three seasons snapped and fell to 8-1 at home. Mfon Udofia and Kammeon Holsey, who came off the bench, scored 10 points apiece.
Miami took a 19-17 lead and never trailed again after Brown’s jumper with 5:49 left before halftime. The Hurricanes led 33-23 at halftime.
Miami outrebounded Georgia Tech 38-26. The Hurricanes shot 41.5 percent (22-for-53) from the field, while the Yellow Jackets shot 32.7 percent (17-for-52).
GAME NOTEBOOK: Miami won both of its games against Georgia Tech last season. … The Hurricanes limited Georgia Tech’s Marcus Georges-Hunt, who entered with a team-high 11.5 points per game, to seven points. … Georgia Tech lost for the first time in nine games in its new arena, McCamish Pavilion.
