No. 4 Miami (Fla.) 78, Pacific 49: Durand Scott led the way with a game-high 21 points, including five 3-pointers, as Hurricanes cruised past the Tigers in the second round of the NCAA Tournament at Austin, Texas.
Shane Larkin added 10 points and matched a career high with nine assists for second-seeded Miami (28-6), which will play Illinois in the East Regional quarterfinals Sunday. Reggie Johnson came off the bench to score seven points and grab 10 rebounds for the Hurricanes, who won their fifth straight.
Travis Fulton had 18 points on a career-best six 3-pointers for 15th-seeded Pacific (22-13), which had its seven-game winning streak snapped. Khalil Kelley added 11 points and nine rebounds for the Tigers, who shot 33.3 percent.
Larkin scored 10 points and dished out five assists as the Hurricanes slowly pulled away in the first half. Miami held Pacific to 29.2 percent shooting in the opening 20 minutes and led by as much as 24 before settling for a 40-19 advantage at intermission.
Pacific trimmed the lead to 20 before Trey McKinney Jones made a 3-pointer and Scott followed with two more from behind the arc for a 56-27 lead with 12:22 to go. Miami finished 12-of-22 from 3-point range.
GAME NOTEBOOK: It was the final game for Pacific coach Bob Thomason, who retires with a 436-322 record in 25 years with the Tigers. … Larkin’s nine assists are a Miami NCAA Tournament record. … The Hurricanes, who were 18-of-21 from the free-throw line, won their first game in the NCAAs since 2008 and improved to 5-6 all-time.
