CALGARY, Alberta -- Mark Giordano may have scored the game-winning goal, but he gave all the credit to goalie Mike Smith.

Giordano scored at 2:19 of overtime to lead the Calgary Flames to a 2-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Thursday. Smith was stellar in the Calgary net, making 43 saves, including three in the extra session.

"He's been our best player this year," Giordano said. "It's not even close.

"When your goalie gives you a performance like that, it's pretty hard to lose. You really want to get that one for him. You feel miserable when they tied it there late and he didn't get the shutout, but just an impressive performance again. He's been great every game he's been in."

On his overtime goal, Giordano took a pass from Matthew Tkachuk and wired a shot to the top corner past Pittsburgh goalie Tristan Jarry, who was making just his second NHL start.

"I picked the puck up in the neutral zone and tried to give a little bit of a fake and turn it back up ice," Tkachuk said. "I knew once I did that I had numbers. Guys were yelling on the bench. I actually tried to give Gio a one-timer but missed the pass a little bit, and he adjusted great and made an awesome shot."

Sean Monahan also scored for the Flames (7-6-0), who have won two in a row and three of their past five.

Patric Hornqvist scored the lone goal of the game for the Penguins (8-5-2), who skated to a 3-2 road win over the Edmonton Oilers one night earlier. The Penguins are now 0-4-1 in the second half of back-to-back games this season, getting outscored 31-8.

"This is one of the better games that we played -- back-to-back or no back-to-back," Pittsburgh coach Mike Sullivan said. "This is definitely the best game we've played on this trip. We probably deserved a better fate. We liked a lot of our game tonight."

After stopping 32 of 34 shots for the Penguins, Jarry received praise for his efforts.

"With the forwards they have and the skill level of the power play that they have, he was tested and did a great job for us and gave us a chance to win," Pittsburgh captain Sidney Crosby said.

The Penguins carried the majority of the play early in the game but were held off the scoresheet by Smith, who made 19 saves in the first period alone.

"As a goalie, you're standing back there and you can't really control what happens in front of you, so there's no sense in worrying about the shot clock," Smith said. "You just worry about the next save. I know it's cliche coming from a goalie, but it's the truth."

Just past the five-minute mark of the opening frame, Jarry had to be sharp to stop a point shot by Giordano that was tipped on net by Micheal Ferland.

Early in the second, Flames forward Sam Bennett laid a big hit on Jake Guentzel behind the Pittsburgh net and then had a scoring chance in front, but his backhand shot went just wide.

Calgary outshot Pittsburgh 14-10 in the second and had a great chance to score with time ticking down in the period, but Jarry kept things scoreless by stopping a shot from the slot by Monahan.

Both goalies continued their strong play in the third as Jarry made a pad save to stop a breakaway attempt by Mark Jankowski. Smith then stood his ground to stop another chance by Guentzel on a breakaway.

Monahan finally broke the scoreless draw during a power play at 15:53 of the third when he backhanded a rebound that went off Pittsburgh defenseman Brian Dumoulin's skate before trickling over the line.

"It's a lucky bounce and it's something that we just have to stay positive about and stay focused, and I think that shows when we were able to tie it up at the end of the game," said Jarry.

Hornqvist tied things up at 18:48 when he deflected a Kris Letang blast from the point past a screened Smith.
